What is actually happening under the hood
01 · Mixed-purpose crawlers
GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot both train on content and fetch pages live to answer a question. Because they do both, a "block training" rule silently blocks them from citing you too. They are now the single largest category of verified crawler traffic.
02 · Blocks you cannot see
A robots.txt can say "welcome" while your CDN returns HTTP 403 at the network layer. Most checkers only read robots.txt, so they report you are fine when you are not. We fetch the page for real.
